Frequently Asked Questions
All you need to know about Catalyst
What is Catalyst?
Catalyst is our design system built specifically for Mendix applications. It helps teams design, develop, and maintain consistent, beautiful, and user-friendly apps — faster and with fewer headaches.
What makes Catalyst different from other design systems?
Catalyst is tailor-made for Mendix. It’s not a general web design system awkwardly adapted — it’s optimized for how Mendix apps work, look, and feel. Plus, it’s built by designers who deeply understand both UX and low-code development.
Why should I use Catalyst for my Mendix app?
Because it saves you time, ensures design consistency across apps, and creates a more professional, polished user experience. It bridges the gap between design and development, so you’re not constantly reinventing the wheel.
What does the implementation process look like?
First, we assess your current app(s) and branding needs. Then, we tailor the Catalyst system for you, set up the design and development frameworks, and help your team integrate it. We can also train your developers if needed!
Can we still manage our own styling when using Catalyst
Absolutely. Catalyst provides a more robust, modern foundation built on Atlas Core, with a broader set of design properties and better developer ergonomics. But you’re still in full control. Your own styling module can override Catalyst wherever needed. This setup minimizes the need for custom CSS and can save your developers a significant amount of time.
Can I customize Catalyst for my brand?
Absolutely! Catalyst is built to be flexible. You can tailor colors, typography, spacing, borders, border-radius and components to match your brand perfectly, while still keeping all the structure and efficiency benefits.
What if we already have a basic style guide?
No problem! We’ll map your existing styles into Catalyst’s structure. You get all the advantages of a robust design system with all the extra options without losing your passed work!
What happens to the styling work we’ve already done?
Your existing styling work remains intact. Catalyst only improves Atlas Core styles. As long as your styling module is loaded after Catalyst, your overrides will still apply.
Note: If you’ve customized standard Atlas classes directly, there may be minor conflicts — usually easy to resolve within your own styling module.
Do our SCSS variables still work with Catalyst?
Yes. If you’ve used standard Atlas SCSS variables in your theme, Catalyst will automatically convert them to CSS variables. This ensures compatibility and makes it easier to manage or update styling without rewriting everything. If you have unique SCSS variables, those will still exist and be used in your own custom styling or branding module.
Is Catalyst just a set of components?
Nope, it’s much more than that. Catalyst includes a full design library (Figma), development resources (Mendix app templates), style guidelines, usage rules, and best practices to make scaling your app landscape easier.
What does “widget support” mean in Catalyst subscriptions?
We take over deprecated widgets used by our subscription customers. This means we rebuild these widgets with the same functionality, make sure they work seamlessly with Catalyst, keep them up to date, and where possible improve their usability.
What kind of widgets are not covered by support?
Widgets that fall outside of fair use include:
– Large, complex widgets built for or by a single customer.
– Widgets with multiple core functionalities in one component.
For these, we’ll provide a separate quote after reviewing the widget’s scope and requirements.
Do you provide support after setup?
How does Catalyst help developers?
Developers get ready-to-use, well-documented components, so they can focus on functionality instead of fighting with styles. It reduces errors, improves handover between design and development, and makes apps easier to maintain.
How does Catalyst relate to Atlas 4?
As of now:
– Atlas 4 will not be available for Mendix 10 or lower. So if you’re staying on Mendix 9 or 10, you’ll still need Catalyst.
– Atlas 4 is a significant step forward, but it still lacks some features that Catalyst offers — including a modern visual baseline.
– We’re currently indexing the differences between Catalyst and Atlas 4.
– A version of Catalyst compatible with Atlas 4 is in the works. Details around pricing and added value will be announced later.
