The context
DUO, the Dutch education executive agency, handles status assignment for institutions in higher and vocational education, among other things. Before that, Aart worked at DUO on an application for processing documents per case and linking them to a case.
The problem
The system had to serve both DUO staff and business users. At the same time, the project was hard to get running: the development environment only worked after more than ten manual steps.
Core problem
For HOST, almost everything had to keep working the same way. For MBOST there was room to do better, and that room had to be used well.
The approach
Where there was room for improvement, Aart worked closely with the UX designer and dug into user needs before the API was designed.
- 1
Extended the HOST front end and made it suitable for both business users and staff, with Jasmine and Spectator tests.
- 2
Designed APIs and connected them to the front end, and clarified back-end processes such as filling the database and the connections between modules.
- 3
Set up a new project for MBOST, for staff and business users, and coached a junior developer and tester.
What was built
An Angular front end on a Java/Spring Boot back end with a carefully designed REST API, extensive documentation and tests on every layer.
Results
The project now starts after a single setup instead of more than ten manual steps. That saves every new developer time.
